I am surprised that you are meeting such difficulties in installing YDL. I
have done a lot of silly things with my G4 iMac (and been punished for
them), but I have *never* had any trouble installing or re-installing YDL
3.0.1.

>From your message, I suspect that your partitioning is not right. For your
information, here is part of my partition map, as given by pdisk:

#: type name length base ( size )
 9: Apple_Bootstrap untitled 2048 @ 1544 ( 1.0M)
10: Apple_HFS sans titre 2 10485760 @ 28560039 ( 5.0G)
11: Apple_HFS sans titre 3 20971520 @ 39045799 ( 10.0G)
12: Apple_HFS sans titre 4 20005258 @ 60017319 ( 9.5G)
13: Apple_UNIX_SVR2 untitled 14680064 @ 3592 ( 7.0G)
14: Apple_UNIX_SVR2 untitled 13352960 @ 14683656 ( 6.4G)
15: Apple_UNIX_SVR2 swap 523423 @ 28036616 (255.6M)
16: Apple_Free Extra 23 @ 80022577

(1 to 8 are Apple system partitions that do not concern us here).

To get that, I followed the instructions found in the "companion to
installing", like this.

1. After booting from an Apple disk, I used the disk tool to reformat the
drive; I gave the first partition the size required to accommodate all the
Linux stuff and marked it as "unallocated"; it bore the number 9.

Then I wrote the Apple partitions: number 10 is HFS, intended for exchanges
between Linux and Mac (perhaps not so useful now that Linux supports
HFSPlus); 11 and 12 are HFSPlus, respectively for Mac OS 9 and 10.

To conclude this first part, I reinstalled the two Mac systems in their
proper places.

2. Now comes the Linux bit. After booting from the YDL disk, I went through
the various easy steps of the GUI installer until I came to the formatting
part. There I had to edit the large unallocated partition, splitting it int=
o
bootstrap, / and /home (both ext3), and swap, and saving the result. In cas=
e
of reinstall, I just have to reformat the / partition.

The rest is quite easy; after installing the various RPMs and configuring
the three-way bootloader, the system rebooted and was ready for use.

If you do something like this (with such modifications as suit your needs),
I am pretty sure that you will be all right. I understand that the importan=
t
point is that bootstrap, then Linux, should be put just after the Apple
system partitions.=20

Good luck.
