Powerbook running very slow

My 12" powerbook was running extremely slow unpacking and installng kile.  It
had done the same installing a new printer driver.  The same installations
were done on a Cube with no speed issues.

I used the ydl support pages recommendation for speeding up a powerbook.  I keyed:

cat /proc/sys/cpu/0/speed-max > /proc/sys/cpu/0/speed

I got this response:

-bash: /proc/sys/cpu/0/speed: No such file or directory


Any ideas?
