Welcome aboard! Getting Yellow Dog Linux installed is half the battle.

I think this question is addressed on our community-run YDL FAQ site --
which is unfortunately, not running right now (our Web guy is out of
town and forgot to feed the little hamster that runs the site). Perhaps
next week we can point you to the correct FAQ. :-(

yum is a command line application that will both download and install
applications that have been appropriately packaged on a yum depository.
We also have a yum FAQ on the site (golly, we had better get that Web
hamster back online!). However, YDL has a pretty good description of how
to use yum on their site:
<http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/solutions/ydl_general/yum.shtml>
Off the top of my head, a couple of things you have to remember with you
are [1] you must be logged in as root to use yum, or you will get a
cryptic error message, [2] a very common and entirely useless error
message, "IOError: [Errno 104] Connection reset by peer," indicates that
the main YDL yum depository is busy, and you should try again later or
choose a mirror site (search the mailing list archives), and [3] the
very first command you might try is (as root):
[root]# yum list > yumlist.txt
This command will create a text file ("yumlist.txt") that contains all
the packages that are available but are not yet installed on your system.
Good luck! I hope others on this list will be able to handle your
remaining questions.
Best wishes,
Clint
