Powerbook 17" hangs during initial boot (USB problem?)

Hi-

I have a 17" 1Ghz Powerbook -
I've installed 3.0 (using all defaults after various install problems)
I'm hanging during boot process always around the USB addressing.
I've tried both with nothing plugged in and with Apple USB keyboard and 
mouse plugged in -  At one point while hung with no USB devices plugged 
in, I plugged in the keyboard and it instantly spewed a couple more 
lines of USB addressing stuff and then hung again...

Anyone got any ideas??
