deactivated network device

I had a problem getting online recently.
I have a dsl connection & my isp changes the address
on my router from time to time.
I assumed that to be the case & changed my network
settings from manual / static to dhcp
no go
It turned out my isp was just "down"
Anyway, I still could not get online after they fixed
their problems.
Monkeying around, I found my network device, eth0, was
deactivated.
Upon activating, everything was fine.
Question:
Why did it deactivate ?
