Installing Linux apps

Dear Roland:
In YDL already there are a whole lot of programs you can take the time
to explore. Just one of them is called xpdf which allows you to read
pdf files without using Adobe Reader because it replaces it completely.

If you investigate what you've got available under the Yellow Dog icon
which functions a bit like the Apple icon -- you'll see the software
under different titles such as Internet, Games, and so on. Check out
OpenOffice.org it can do mostly all the functions of the entire MS
Office Suite including Access which the MS Office package for the Mac
STILL doesn't include! You can not just access dbase and My SQL you can
create Adabas databases as well.

I mention OpenOffice.org because version 1.0 allows you to create pdf
files within OpenOffice dox which means you can create whatever files
within Word, transport them into Open Office or develop your material
entirely within OpenOffice in the first place and then generate a pdf
document by printing from within OpenOffice 1.0. OpenOffice 1.1.2 is
even easier...it provides an easily visible icon which when clicked
produces a pdf file from within any document you create within
OpenOffice.org Keep Adobe Reader for your Mac OS side.

As for installing and downloading apps...use yum
An example of one way to use yum is to search for what application and
its associated components are most current:

[root@arakus aguilarojo]# yum search gkrellm*

I made a choice and tell it to install whatever it finds associated with
gkrellm:

What is nice about doing installations this way is that yum does most of
the work and tells me what is going on during the process. For more
info consult the YDL FAQ page.

Then you examine the list, see what you want and then tell yum to get it
and install it for you:
