Problems with "startx"

I've got YDL up and running on a PM7600 G3/300, and I'm hitting a
weirdness, if not outright problem - I can get KDE up and running, but I've
got a mess of errors (or what I assume are problems, at least) that need to
be fixed.

Once I drop out of X, I'm seeing the tail end of what looks like a whole
laundry list of "libpng warning: <various things wrong>" messages on the
screen, followed by (hand-typed verbatim - typos are mine unless otherwise
noted)

mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding
Can't get own host name. Your system is severely misconfigured.

QClipboard: Unknown SelectionNotify event received
kliper is already running!
QFont::setPixelSize: Pixel size <= 0 (-1)
startkde: shutting down...
KLauncher: Exiting on signal 1
startkde: running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.

waiting for X server to shut down

[bash prompt appears here]

First and worst... Why is it complaining that I've got a misconfigured
system? It's the base install of 3.0.1. I've used (either as root, or su-ed
to root) hostname to set a name for the machine, so I can't see that being
the reason.

Second, is there some way to capture *ALL* screen output from the startx
script (Don't say "startx >> somefile" - "somefile" is invariably
zero-length when I leave KDE) so I can trace what's going on? I type
"startx", and after seeing what I *THINK* is the text

hostname: Host name lookup failure

flicker onto the screen, my display goes "graphics only", as KDE/X starts
up. When I bail out of X to check what went on, a whole mess of SOMETHING
has been displayed, scrolling any diagnostics from the beginning of the
process off the top of the screen.

It would be a MAJOR help if I could actually *SEE* the messages - I can't
fix what I don't know is broken, if you know what I mean...

Anybody got any ideas for me on that score?

Finally, I'm running an Apple display ("Macintosh Color Display" - Model
number not visible anywhere, although it shows a "Family Number" of M1212)
that doesn't seem to be known/liked by KDE/YDL/SOMETHING.

When I get into KDE, I'm getting what I can best describe as "wraparound" -
The image is visibly "reverse-pincushioned" (Top and bottom of the image
are narrow, middle is wider) and the image is shifted to the right by
roughly half an inch from where it normally is when in either text mode, or
under MacOS, and the right hand side is obviously "bouncing off the glass"
- The beam is hitting the glass before being reflected back onto the
phosphors, and the resulting image is *VERY* similar to what you'd expect
to see if you had a transparent piece of paper with an image on it, and the
rightmost 3/4 inch or so were "curled under", showing you the back of the
sheet, with the "front" image visible through the curled over portion. I'm
running using the "Generic-OF compatible" driver (Using the 7600's built-in
video, with 2megs of video RAM installed), and for lack of any better fit,
I've used the "System Settings:Display" module to tell it I'm running an
Apple Basic Color Monitor, and that it should be displaying 640x480 in
millions of colors.

What I'm seeing makes me *REALLY* strongly suspect I've got a timing issue
- I can see similar mangling of the display image by changing sync rates
under MacOS. Unfortunately, I have no clue what sync I SHOULD be using for
this monitor (which isn't listed as one of the options available in the
Display|Advanced panel)

Any clue what I need to try to fix this difficulty (WITHOUT throwing cash
at the concept of a new monito/video card! This one works fine under MacOS,
and I'm NOT willing to spend anything but time on fixing the trouble.)?
