can't install os x?

Hold down the "c" key when you restart/turn on your computer with the
OS X install DVD in the drive.

Since you're prepared to re-format the drive, that's exactly what
you'll have to do.

>From one of the first menus you'll be able to determine partition
layout. Make sure that YDL has at least 6 GB and OS X 20-30 GB (give
yourself lots of room for iPhoto and iTunes or video editing). You may
even want to have a third partition that you can use for another OS
(Gentoo, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Mandrake, etc.) or a place where you
can share data between the two OSes (HFS+ is probably the safest bet
since it'll work with OS X without any extra software needed, and
Linux can handle HFS+ with a minimum of fuss).
