YDL 4.0.1 boots into black screen on G3 B&W and freezes

YDL 4.0.1 boots into black screen on G3 B&W, says "config error" etc... 
then it says "boot:" and freezes? 
keyboard doesnt work and the system is frozen. could be that the computer doesnt respond on USB PC keyboard which i use (works fine under osx)?

specs: G3 b&w 300mhz, 256mb RAM, 20gb HD (keyboard is pc usb)
