How to update using yum

The first two steps are "witty remarks" and are optional to using yum:

Optional 1. login to your local PS3 as a user and type yum, try to figure
         out the meaning of the options. Type a few to see interesting things.

Optional 2. subscribe to Duke University's yum mailing list.

1. Goto the URL http://www.ydl.net/node/58.  The page is entitled
        "Pointing yum to YDL.net" and should be read a few times.

2. Login to your local machine as root and look at the YDL.net page
        in another window. 

        You see an introduction and three files which you will edit after
        creating a directory called /etc/yum/repos.d

3. Edit the files yellowdog-base.repo, yellowdog-extras.repo,
        yellowdog-updates.repo per the YDL.net page's instructions

4. my log looks like:

> [root at localhost tkutz]# cd /etc/yum.repos.d
> [root at localhost yum.repos.d]# vi yellowdog-base.repo
> [root at localhost yum.repos.d]# vi yellowdog-extras.repo
> [root at localhost yum.repos.d]# vi yellowdog-updates.repo
> [root at localhost yum.repos.d]# ls
> yellowdog-extras.repo yellowdog-base.repo  yellowdog-updates.repo
> [root at localhost yum.repos.d]# yum update
> Loading "installonlyn" plugin
> Setting up Update Process
> Setting up repositories
> base
> [1/1] base                      100%
> |=========================| 1.1 kB    00:00 Reading repository
> metadata in from local files primary.xml.gz            100%
> |=========================| 759 kB    00:01 base      :
