The 2.4 kernel on ppc seems to support firewire, though I don't believe
anything besides digital video cameras are supported yet (except for
preliminary ethernet support).
Personally I was able to use gscanbus and watch the info change as I
connected a 6pin-to-6pin firewire cable up between two G3s. At the
office we don't have any firewire devices, but I spent part of a day
trying to get the ethernet over 1394 (firewire is really ieee 1394 btw)
working, but there's some x86 specific code in it and I haven't had much
time to try and fix it yet.
Another note, one of my friends has a Canon XL1 camera that he let me
borrow for a little while before I had this job, and I was able to
download avi movies off of it with dvgrab on my x86 at home. That
friend has since moved to California, so I don't have access to try it
out on a Macintosh. I believe it would work though.
