Like you, I don't even have a floppy drive connected to the machine. I just
tried it again with the same result. Specifically, I entered

mdir tmp/blah

as a non-root user in a kvt terminal. The system locked up for about 2 minutes
and then rebooted.

There is nothing particularly unique about the system. 99% of what is
installed either came directly off of YD CD or the YD site.
