Subject: Re: IBM F50 with a Serial console and other questions

Now that I've had some time to try some things.....
1) I've tried this with both the YD install disk and the one I built, still no go...
2) I deleted /dev/console and then linked /dev/console to /dev/ttyS0 which was present. Same symptoms.
3) I installed the latest quik and tried a boot. After you get the boot up icons, the cursor spins a lot and then sits there. I booted using the disk, and tried running quik by hand, I now get "Quik does not need to be run on CHRP machines."
I've also noticed that the kernel I built using the standard 2.2.13 distribution doesn't seem to recognize the SCSI controllers in the F50, where the CS 1.1 kernel (2.2.12-1b) does. I didn't see a config file on the YD ftp site, so I'm not sure I picked the right config options, but after reading the output of my kernels boot attempt, I'm pretty sure I have. Dan Burcaw stated that they were using a standard kernel for their distro, I'm assuming he meant from vger. Did that ever get sent to Linus? Since I'm behind a firewall, I can't get CVS access, I guess I'm going to try to set it up from home.
After reading this, I realize it seems kind of negative, I really don't mean that and I appreciate your help. Thanks again.

} 1) When building a kernel if I define CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE along with CONFIG_SERIAL_CONSOLE the boot disk will work on a video card based box but not on one with a serial console. To get the serial console working I have to not configure the vga console option. Is there any way to build a boot diskette that will work with any style of console?
} 2) Once I got the boot disk working on the F50, I can't get the installer to run. My console is on tty0. What I get is:
You'll probably need to modify the initrd image so that console is linked to ttyS0 and also you need a ttyS0 in the ramdisk, I'm not sure if they have one there now.
} Yellow Dog Install init vers. 1.1 } } (lines snipped) } } running install... } failed to open /dev/tty1failed } } I can't recover from this. } } I've been looking for the source for the install init and the install programs, but can't find them anywhere. Are they available anyplace?
Grab the latest quik rpm from ftp.ppc.kernel.org/pub/linuxppc/misc/ and let me know what trouble it gives you. We can work on it from there!
} 3) On another note, I still haven't been able to boot a system directly from the hard drive using quik. Has any progress been made on this?
