Try booting from within Open Firmware and see if that helps.

At the OF prompt just type: boot cd:,\\:tbxi

It should boot with the 2.2.17 if I remember correctly, but you may
experience problems with the networking card. If that's the case,
download the new kernel from
ftp://ftp.terraplex.com/pub/updates/kernel/2.2.18/ and install it.
