I had this problem... it's a noted bug in atalkd and afpd.

Have the server give you a welcome message...

I'm not sure how I did it (just did a quick search on the conf files,
etc... and nothing)... but I know this list solved the problem for
me. Search the archives. There's an easy fix... :)
