The problem apparently is that the MOL-audio driver
never gets selected. I think (although I have to
investigate some more) that the Sound control panel
probes the hardware or makes some assumptions about the
built-in sound (to be compatible with old versions of
Sound Manager?).

Two things to try:

- Get the 9.0 sound panel (it works at least in MacOS 8.6).

- Trash the preferences file which contains the sound
output settings (I don't remember which file that is -
simply move out the entire preferences folder from your
System Folder and reboot). Possibly the MOL sound component
will then be selected as the default.
