This is what I did,

I set up a dhcp server on another box and set the "mol" mac to use dhcp
for getting it's ip. I set the "mol" mac tcp/ip setting to be active
all the time and I assigned a static ip to the linux side. Worked like
a charm.

I don't use appletalk so I never tried to get it working in this
instance.
