Hard disk partitions required for Yellowdog?

yeah, linux can be installed on a single parition. i have done it before. i 
also have a question about partitioning. i am using mac os 9.0 with an iBook 
(the old clamshell ones). anyways, when i go into disk utilities and 
partition my hard drive into 2 partition (unallocated as the first partition, 
and mac os standard for my second partition). anyways, i click initiazile or 
whatever and it says initialization was sucessful. then, just to check, i go 
back to custom set up and it says that there is only one parition and that 
the first patition is mac os extended. this isnt suppose to happen, and when 
i install YDL, it doesnt install
