YDL virtual machine?

Connectix VPC emulates a fairly standard configuration Wintel box, and an
x86 distro can run (although I would stick with Connectix's recommended
distro, RedHat). As YDL is a PPC distro, it won't run under VPC.
OS9 is not loaded as a virtual machine, it runs native under a
compatibility layer. Not exactly the same thing as emulation.
For your specific situation, you will have to rely on the supported
hardware (ie IDE or SCSI disks) or run an x86 binary under VPC, which will
use the Mac's protocols to access disks (which doesn't actually mean it
would work).
