Xterm won't open in Blackbox

I'm absolutely thrilled to have finally found a fast sleek replacement 
for the bulky KDE and Gnome WMs.  Blackbox is really ideal for me.  But, 
for some reason, everytime I try and open xterm, a window briefly 
flashes and then disappears.  It seems to crash on startup.  Is there a 
configuration file somewhere that I could initialize or something?  I 
don't even know where to start.  Thanks in advance.
