no audio CD playback w/ PowerMac G4 Silver?

I have a Powermac G4 Silver with a HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8240B drive. 
Everything works fine, including accessing the drive, writing cd's (using 
ide_scsi) and ripping audio cd's, except playback of audio cd's. I tried 
grip and the gnome cd player, both with and without scsi emulation, and get 
no errors but also no sound. Playback works with MacOS X, so the hw seems to 
be ok. Any idea?
