HELP: post power-failure boot probs

help! we had storms that knocked power out while my 9600 was up running YDL 2.3
since then i can't get it to boot into YDL. from the mac side, bootX 
starts the run but stops after the initial 8 lines at 'booting.....' 
and hangs

restart into linux respawns the x windows server too fast so it stops 
for the 5 minutes.
during it's respawning i cannot get it to kill to the x windows 
server. control-option-(big)delete does nothing, control-option-F1 
does nothing, control-option-(little)delete terminates and reboots 
the whole computer. i can't get in to change the runlevel to reset 
the vid config...
interactive startup saying no to xfs does nothing either, it still 
respawns the x server...?
any other ways in to change the runlevel while it's booting?
