YDL 2.3 iBook install: no hard disk found

This is on an iBook I bought 4 months ago, the one with
the 14" LCD.

It currently has debian installed, and working, but I need
a more RedHat-like install for software development.

What happens:

Boot the machine from CD, installation screen comes up,
lets me choose keyboard, mouse, but when starting partitioning
the hard disk is not found.

The installation kernel also does not seem to recognize hda.
I tried booting with hda=ide-scsi but that didn't work.
Installation docs do not mention any problems but video
on iBooks.

Can anyone help me out here?
