My LaCie external firewire cd-rw works fine in YDL2.3. I do the usual
firewire modprobe magic in rc.local:

modprobe ieee1394
modprobe ohci1394
sleep 2
modprobe raw1394
modprobe sbp2


The only issue is that the device _must_ be on at boot time to be
detected.  If it isn't on at boot time, no amount of power-cycling or
connection-cycling will make it detectable later.
