imap on yellowdoglinux 2.1

That's "normal" - you should look for an IMAP HOWTO.  Basically, you need
to specify the base directory and separator (/ I think for UW) within the
IMAP client.  Cyrus IMAP is better but much, much harder to install and set
up.
