Sound troubles

I am running the 2.4.19-pre8-ben0 kernel with KDE 3.0 on a 700Mhz CRT iMac.  
The problem is this:  When i log in i get a message saying "device /dev/dsp 
can't be opened (No such device)" and I can't get any sound to work.  
However, if I logout, and then log in again, the sound works fine.  Is there 
a workaround for this?  I'm still pretty much a newbie, and this is starting 
to make me feel dumb.  Any assistance would be welcome.
