Cant boot after install YDL 2.3

Hai there,

After I install YDL 2.3 on my iMac Rev B with 96MB en 60 GB HD, I get the following message:

boot:linux
Please wait, loading kernel...
/pci/mac-io/ide@20000/disk@0:8,/boot/vmlinux: Input/Output error

Install went fine but this message keeps popping after each (re)install, even after installation on a single drive (no additional OS9). Partitions are there, and yaboot points the right one so it seems.
It seems after may tries I'm lost here.
Could it be an firmware issue or just a silly thing I don't get?

Can anybody help me starting up YDL on my dear mac? Where to go from here?
