Okay,

I just added "cat /dev/sndstat" to the end of my /etc/rc.d/rc.2/S99local, I
then rebooted and came in and Voila! Sound works good on the first pass..
Problem #1 is solved... It's a hack but it works and I'm happy...

Anyone else have input on Problem #2 - XMMS playing a regular CD???

Thanks Angela for your post!
