Disappearing GNOME desktop icons

Nautilus is actually drawing them, so try this:  Open Nautilus,
choose Preferences -> Edit Preferences, click on the "Windows &
Desktop" tab, and check "Use Nautilus to draw the desktop."
Hopefully, this will restore the missing icons.
