How do you setup a second NIC?

I have an 8500 that I've installed a Asante Fast 690 10/100 NIC and 
have not be able to get both the internal interface and the new card to 
work correctly at the same time (eth0 & eth1). Works fine separately 
but, I want to have my internet services (web, email, ftp and dns) 
running off of the internal interface (eth1) and my appletalk file 
services running off of the Asante card (eth0). Despite my every 
attempt, I've been unable to successfully do this. What is the trick? 
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
