The 333mhz imac ended up having problems installing off a 700meg CDR. I
ended up using a 650CDR for the ISOs. Now 3.0 is up and running on my imac.
Seems slower than 2.3:/ I haven't looked into this yet.

3.0 would only install using the text installer, which isn't too bad.

Thanks for your help all!

	I got this G3 ibook from terrasoft in August, and promptly went
out and got a second battery. One battery shows none of the four LEDs
lit, and still operates normally. The other shows one little green LED
lit (the innermost one when it's in the ibook) and does not. When it's
in, the machine won't even turn on; but it will run with it in and the
transformer supplying power from the wall.

	I have run 2.3 as much of the time as possible, usually 24/7 for
weeks at a time in recent months. (At first, I used to shut down and
disconnect everything nightly.)

	But I ran OSX 10.1.5 for three weeks in January, and am running
it again now, because I can't seem to make 2.3 connect at all when I'm
stuck with dialup only.And I ran it for a week or two in another house
till an apple-fancying friend helped me long distance to figure out how
to make it use DSL through a linksys router.

	Surely no battery kept recharged or recharging should die so
soon! What should I do?

Thanks Alex! That's a really great HOWTO. It covers all the bases.
Long is good! in this case.

Just out of curiosity, where did you learn all that stuff in the first
place?

Is there an "official" document somewhere that gives the syntax and
semantics (even if informally!) of the "boot.conf" file?

Thanks!

Rick

This is the sign of 700 meg CDs being used on an older optical drive.
Burn the isos on 650 meg discs.. and I'd make the bet that the problem
goes away.

Alexander and others,

I have just some small points left after this rather complete HOWTO from
Alexander :-)

I run miboot on all the oldworld machines I have (unless they are able to
run quik, like my ANS) ...

Holding down some keys while starting miboot (I discovered while holding
<Delete><Option><Command><Shift> to boot from a miboot partition) will
show you that miboot is actually looking for a couple of different config
files on differnet places on the hfs partition.

This how my miboot /boothfs partition looks (Desktop shit removed for
clearer reading) this partition is 20MB.

[root@aws9650 boot-hfs]# tree
.
|-- System Folder
|   |-- Finder
|   |-- Preferences
|   |-- README
|   |-- System
|   |-- yaboot
|   `-- yaboot.conf
|-- System.map
|-- System.map-2.4.18-0.8a
|-- System.map-2.4.18-ben0
|-- System.map-2.4.19-ben0
|-- first.b
|-- kernel.h
|-- module-info
|-- module-info-2.4.18-0.8a
|-- second
|-- second.b
|-- vmlinux
|-- vmlinux-2.4.18-0.8a
|-- vmlinux-2.4.18-ben0
`-- vmlinux-2.4.19-ben0

as you can see, miboot is called "yaboot" here and the conf is called
"yaboot.conf" inside the "System Folder"
The real kernel stuff is in the root off /boot-hfs

This is how my "yaboot.conf" looks :

[root@aws9650 System Folder]# cat yaboot.conf
init-message = "\nWelcome to YellowDog!\Press <TAB> for boot options.\n\n"
timeout = 100
default = vmlinux-2.4.18-ben0-s

image = vmlinux
label = vmlinux
append = "video=imsttfb:vmode:17,cmode:8 devfs=nomount"
root = /dev/sdb9

image = vmlinux-2.4.18-0.8a
label = vmlinux-2.4.18-0.8a
append = "video=imsttfb:vmode:17,cmode:8 devfs=nomount"
root = /dev/sdb9

image = vmlinux-2.4.18-ben0
label = vmlinux-2.4.18-ben0-s
append = "console=ttyS0,38400 console=tty0 video=imsttfb:vmode:17,cmode:8
devfs=nomount"
root = /dev/sdb9

image = vmlinux-2.4.19-ben0
label = vmlinux-2.4.19-ben0-s
append = "console=ttyS0,38400 console=tty0 video=imsttfb:vmode:17,cmode:8
devfs=nomount"
root = /dev/sdb9

The syntax is mostly the same as in other popular bootloader config files
like yaboot, quik or even lilo ...

BUT, be carefull not to make the "label = xxxxxxxxxxx" to long, I am not
exactly sure, but making it longer than perhaps 24 chars, your config will
not work anymore and miboot is not good in error-messages ....

You can pass all kernel arguments you want in the "append" tag, I guess
there is also an length limit on that but don't now how long it might be
in miboot (should look into the source for that)

And YES, I am using the IMSTTFB video card and it works fine, it did from
YDL2.0 til now in YDL3.0. This is the original Apple OEM 4MB IMSTT card
that came in the AWS9650 machines.

I hope YDL puts this HOW-TO from Alexander with perhaps some add-on on
there web-site and award Alexander with some nice T-Shirt, I think he
deserves it ;-)

Have fun,

Eddie

Were you running in plugged in mode a lot? I know that batteries can
start to degrade after long periods this... they really need to drain
and recharge to last a long time.

Nope, not really. If, then it should be at Ben Herrenschmid's homepage
- but I haven't found it yet (din't search intensly though :)

http://penguinppc.org/~benh/

Maybe a complete documentation was included in earlier versions of
miboot. I remember that stuff from back when I used LinuxPPC. Miboot
was the way, they got bootable install CDs (and it is still possible to
get bootable CDs for OldWorld machines this way). Therefore, in those
days, miboot support was offered through LinuxPPC support in a way ;)
IMHO, it is the easiest way, to get OldWorld machines and NuBus
PowerMacs to boot a Linux only installation, as it avoids loading any
MacOS stuff and therefore minimizes complications. Only exemtions are
CPU upgrade cards, which usually need some System Extensions to load in
order for the machine to see the newer CPU and switch to it, _before_
loading the Linux kernel.

Hi to all,

I executed the time/clock application from the Startmenu of the
Gnome-Desktop which opened another clock on my desktop that I have two of
them now.

Of course I want only one. How can I get rid of the second ? Somebody
suggested doing a right-mouseclick but what is the the right mouseclick on
PPC

Thanks a lot in advance
