YDL 3.0 not even seeing my firewire drive

The Docs are out of date, as almost anything having to do with the 
kernel is :-)  Newer kernels need the rescan even if the modules are 
loaded properly.  When we get 2.6 this problem will go away as its 
related to how the scsi sub-system deals with hot swappable devices 
under 2.4. This has been much improved in the new kernel.
