(long) Gnome 2 (was YDL 2.3 Custom Install isn't custom)

Ok I did this and it's not working

I added the list of ftp sites to

/etc/apt/sources.list
/usr/share/doc/apt-0.3.19....../sources.list

and then ran apt-get update then apt-get install gnome-2.0.3

It says it can't find the file.
