G4 400mhz and DHCP

Your problem sounds like a link negotiation issue. Most likely 
auto-negotiation is off on the router ethernet port and you Mac is 
stuck trying to figure out what link rate to use to connect (10,100, 
half, full). This will cause the light to come and go as you have seen 
and keep the connection from working.

Check the configuration on the router to make sure it is set for 
auto-negotiation. If it is, the two machines are having trouble 
agreeing and you will need to force the speed by setting it on both 
devices.
