YDL2.3, Xserve, and firewire

Has anyone gotten the firewire port to work on the Xserve running 2.3?  
I've rebuilt the kernel with several types of interfaces compiled in, 
but nothing happens when I plug in a firewire drive and power it up.

It's not a high priority to me, but it would be handy as all the OSX 
systems have working firewire ports and it would be nice to be able to 
mount drives on the server, too.  Our business involves very large 
files (several GB) and if we can just move a firewire drive to the 
server is often faster than moving the data over the network (esp. 
since that really loads down the net).
