I don't know if this will help but I had a lot of problems
installing about 6 months ago (it's all in the list archive) and my
/etc/yaboot.conf file has this in it to ensure that the HD and CD
are found:

# yaboot images
image=/boot/vmlinux
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda13
        append="hda=16383,16,64 hdb=ide-scsi"
