Radeon 7500 console problem

I run 2.4.20-ben1 on a G4 silver with a Radeon 7500 QW and a Formac 1740 
LCD flat panel. This *used* to work both with X11 and in console mode with 
the kernel argument "video=radeon:1280x1024-8@60" until I played with 
settings in MacOS X... :-//

Now this arg displays some static colors on the LCD both in console and 
X11 mode (at some point the static "switches"), as if the timings are 
completely out of range. I can see both the console startup messages and 
run X11 using "novideo" in yaboot.conf, but after X11 has been started, 
the console mode is broken: I see 16 small and very dim unusable 
"consoles" distributed in 4 rows plus some flickering bright noise.

Any idea how I can get both working X11 *and* console mode back?
