(long) Gnome 2 (was YDL 2.3 Custom Install isn't custom)

Hmmm .... not wanting to start a flame war .. but -

You hate KDE cause its horrible... but to install Gnome 2 is a huge list 
of complicated instructions complete with searches to resolve that fact 
that it wont build cleanly....

Yet KDE 3.0 installs simply....

In addition Enlightenment installs from source in about 120 seconds with 
no code changes and no scrabbling about on mailing lists or Google...

I am wondering about the definition of horrible here... ;-)
