3.0 on Umax C600 -- cannot open display

I'm trying desperately to find boot arguments that will allow me to run 
the installer on a Umax C600. I keep getting the messages:

X server started succesfully.

and then:

(mini-wm:63): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :1

Any ideas about the chipset? I've tried controlfb, atyfb, I looked at 
the page on sourceforge and they are listed as unknown, I can't find 
any ideas on the web.

Is there a way I can use the text installer?
