ot (?!) - wlan cards /w Powerbook and YDL

Dear list,

I hope that this question isn't entirely off topic and hope that you know some help:
Is it possible to use standard PC wlan cards (that work with i386 linux) in a PowerBook that runs (Yellow Dog) Linux? Or do I still need the special AirPort card?
Or, the other way round: May I use a AirPort PC card 1) under Linux and 2) with a standard WLAN access point?
