vlc not starting any more :(

Neither the directory ~/.vlc, nor the file ~/.vlc/vlcrc has been created
as of yet. the symptom is user independant. No user on the system can
use vlc anymore.

I tried a more verbose output by adding --verbose 2:

Maybe anyone can figure out what my problem is. I guess it somehow has
to do with the X-Window Server. It does not matter whether I log into
GNOME or KDE - vlc jsut won't start :(

Any help appreciated.
