static noise and buzzing on YDL

I too have had this problem on several laptops, it's somehow related to 
the LCD creating interference (magnetic? electromagnetic?) as the 
individual pixels are turned on and off. I usually turn down the 'pcm' 
and 'vol' sliders to about 75% (this is using the GNOME Volume Control 
app, YMMV with KDE) and it goes away.
