VDQ: Play music CD on 2.3 iBook??

Very Dumb Question:

	When I insert a disk with OSX booted, it plays it -- a lot 
better if I connect my external speakers, but it does play it, though 
not very loud even at max. 

	But when I insert the same CD with YDL 2.3 booted, it brings up
some program without any visible volume control, which shows a track
going, but gives no audible sound even with the external speakers.
