Internet connection thru Airport

There have been many posts to the list by folks trying to connect from
YDL to the net using Airport, so I'll pass on my experience in case it
can help someone else. I worked for weeks on this problem. Everything
seemed to indicate that eth1 (the Airport wireless ethernet interface)
was properly configured and--when I would use the Network Device Control
or the command line--that it was active. However, I could not ping an
outside IP address or browse or send email in Mozilla.
Last night, when I rebooted into YDL from the Mac side, I left the
connection thru Airport open, rather than closing it--along with
everything else I had open--as I always had before. When I booted into
YDL this time, I could successfully ping, open Web pages, send emails. I
was there all the time with regard to the essential config chores--I
just couldn't open the connection itself if it was closed.
If you have been stymied by this problem, see if you can open the
connection before booting into YDL. (In my case, my iMac is dual-boot
MacOSX and YDL. Also, my wife's iBook is on the same network, and I can
open the connection there.) If so, you too may find that you're "already
there." Hope so.
Now, I just have to find out how to open the connection to the Net
itself in YDL if it is closed (and of course, turn it back off)--without
resort to these outside interventions. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks. --Harvey
