I think this is a great idea in basic principle. However, if you were going
to take a survey on web site about whether to chuck the mailing lists, do
you think you'd get much input from people who follow the list?

Having a response page on the web site would make sense. Posing the
question there would mostly be ignored by the very users which such a
change would affect (though I suspect at least one of us would have seen
and posted a Holy Smoke, Batman!)
