One of the nice things I noticed in the Yellow Dog
system was that turning on the nfs service
automatically seemed to turn on two accompanying
services. If I type:

[clint@YellowPup]$ sudo /sbin/service nfs status
Password:
rpc.mountd (pid 13803) is running...
nfsd (pid 13795 13794 13793...) is running...
rpc.rquotad (pid 13784) is running...

... which I take as good signs.

I will experiment with the rest of your suggestions
when I am more alert after some sleep. :-)
