Friends:

Many, many thanks to Rene Norbert <mare AT wanadoo DOT

Well, Mr. Norbert was right: I had fun! I installed,
and am now running OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 on my
Wallstreet under Yellow Dog Linux 3.0. Very sweet.
Below are my installation notes. The hardest parts
were [a] downloading the .tar.gz installer file (I
finally found a mirror, see below), and [b]
discovering the command to start OpenOffice writer
(which has been renamed "swriter," and resides in a
subdirectory of the user's home:

[clint@YellowPup]$ pwd
/home/clint/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/program/swriter

Jehosephat! Now copy and paste works -- welcome to the
1980s! OOo 1.1.0 starts more quickly (though it is
still on the slow side), and fonts generally look
*much* better.

There are still some visual artifacts (that can be
erased by minimizing then maximizing the window), and
a few things seem not to follow Windows (or even
Macintosh) conventions. "Control-F11" does not bring
up the Styles catalog, as indicated, although F11 does
bring up the Stylist.

Overall, I am impressed, if wary. And now, I have a
grant application to write.... ;-)

My installation notes:

Step one: Remove OpenOffice.org 1.0.2

[clint@YellowPup clint]$ sudo yum remove openoffice
Password:
Gathering package information from servers
Getting headers from: Yellow Dog Linux 3.0 base
Getting headers from: Yellow Dog Linux 3.0 updates
Finding updated packages
Downloading needed headers
Resolving dependencies
Dependencies resolved
I will do the following:
[erase: openoffice.ppc]
Is this ok [y/N]: y
Calculating available disk space - this could take a
bit
Erased: openoffice.ppc
Transaction(s) Complete

Step 2: Download OpenOffice.org 1.1.0 for PPC

<http://ftp.rediris.es/ftp/mirror/openoffice.org/contrib/linuxppc/>

[clint@YellowPup downloads]$ ls -aFl OO*
-rw-rw-r-- 1 clint clint 82785506 Feb 15
13:54
OOo_1.1.0_LinuxPowerPC_installer.tar.gz
-rw-rw-r-- 1 clint clint 2296 Feb 15
13:24
OOo_1.1.0_README_FIRST.txt

Step 3: Move from downloads directory to /usr/local (I
don't know why
this would
be necessary)

[clint@YellowPup downloads]$ sudo cp
./OOo_1.1.0_LinuxPowerPC_installer.tar.gz /usr/local/
Password:
[clint@YellowPup downloads]$ ls -aFl /usr/local/OO*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13109784 Feb 15
13:22
/usr/local/OOo_1.1.0_LinuxPowerPC_installer.tar.gz

Step 4: Follow instructions from the ReadMe

<ftp://ftp.yellowdoglinux.com/pub/yellowdog/software/openoffice/OOo_1.1.0_README_FIRST.txt>

[1] Install as root:

[clint@YellowPup downloads]$ su -

[root@YellowPup root]# cd /usr/local/
[root@YellowPup local]# ls

[root@YellowPup local]# tar -zxf

[root@YellowPup OOo_1.1.0_LinuxPowerPC_installer]# cd

[root@YellowPup OOo_1.1.0_LinuxPowerPC_installer]#
chown -R root:root ./
[root@YellowPup OOo_1.1.0_LinuxPowerPC_installer]#
./setup -net

(Installer opens -- follow prompts for standard
installation)
Installation directory: /opt/OpenOffice.org1.1.0
Do not use Java with OpenOffice.org 1.1.0
Click "Complete" to exit the installer

[2] Complete installation as regular user:

>From the Setup Readme: "Please note that copy and
paste via clipboard between OpenOffice.org 1.0 and
OpenOffice.org 1.1 might not work in OpenOffice.org
format. If that happens, choose 'Edit - Paste Special'
and choose a format other than OpenOffice.org, or open
the document in OpenOffice.org 1.1 directly."

Choose Local Installation rather than Net
installation.

Creates new directory:
/home/clint/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/

Click "Complete" to exit the installation program.

[3] Go to new OpenOffice.org directory in my home
directory:

[clint@YellowPup clint]$ cd ~/OpenOffice.org1.1.0/
[clint@YellowPup OpenOffice.org1.1.0]$ ls
help program setup spadmin

THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME.html
LICENSE.html README.html soffice user
[clint@YellowPup OpenOffice.org1.1.0]$ ./soffice

And it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best wishes,
Clint
