Best 2.6 kernel for OldWorld PowerMac?

Has anyone tried a 2.6 kernel on an OldWorld PowerMac?  I've got an old
beige G3 sitting here doing nothing in particular that I'd like to try
something "experimental" with -- like building/installing a kernel from
source.  Where's the best place to get source for a PPC-ready 2.6.x kernel?

I'll be using either YDL 3.01 or Debian testing/Sarge runtime utilities.
 Any suggestions?  Any particularly good HowTo's?
