There is a known problem causing the JITC to crash on G3s. Setting the
enironment variable JITC_PROCESSOR_TYPE to 6 fixes that. It makes the JITC
think it's running on a PPC604 IIRC. The problem seems to be fixed in the
IBMJava2-SDK-1.4.1-1.0 version, though.
