I've used Suse, RH, Mandrake, and Gentoo on several x86 machines. Maybe this
is due to the differences over time that I've used them, but I've found
Gentoo extremely stable. The caveat, though, is that this is the one I'm
most currently using, along with Mandrake. Given the quality of the two
distro's I would be hard pressed for a hands-down decision. If you don't
have high bandwidth network connection, it's an easier decision -- go with
Mandrake. Gentoo would be really painful over a dialup line.

My OT "$/50".
